Frequently asked questions
What is a powerchair?
A powerchair is a battery-powered wheelchair with its own drive base. It is normally controlled by a joystick, and can be fitted with specialist controls, power seating functions such as tilt, recline, elevate and stand, and a wide range of seating.
What is the difference between front-, mid- and rear-wheel drive?
Where the drive wheels sit changes how the chair handles. Mid-wheel drive chairs turn in a small space, which suits indoor use. Front-wheel drive chairs tend to handle kerbs and obstacles well. Rear-wheel drive chairs usually feel stable at higher speeds.
How fast do powerchairs go?
Manufacturer-quoted top speeds in our catalogue run from about 2 to 15 km/h (1 to 9 mph). In the UK, many powerchairs are limited to 4 mph (6 km/h) for pavement use, and Class 3 vehicles can reach 8 mph (12 km/h) on the road.
Can a child use a powerchair?
Yes. Paediatric powerchairs are smaller and adjustable so they can grow with the child. A clinician can advise on readiness, seating and controls.
